We are looking for other thought leaders in their fields of expertise who also believe in our vision and can work beside us to make this dream a reality. The Sr. Propulsion Design Engineer will be responsible for thermal analysis of the propulsion system and its components to develop and verify design objectives and qualification envelopes. This role is for a dynamic, self-starting individual with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position located at our facility in Huntington Beach, CA, with periodic travel to our Arizona Test Site (ATS) near Tucson, AZ.
As a Sr. Propulsion Design Engineer, you will leverage your knowledge, experience, and creativity to develop novel solutions at the cutting edge of space technology. The responsibilities of this position will be analysis intensive, primarily supporting the development and verification of propulsion system thermal/fluid models and associated mechanical design.
  • Responsible for a portion of the propulsion systems
  • Perform fluid analyses for pressure balance, component design allowable, and consumables determination
  • Design and perform trade studies relating to subsystem design, architecture and operation
  • Configuration development, detailed design, and verification activities
  • Work with interdisciplinary teams to ensure the sub-system or component will meet the system requirements and performs integrally with avionics, GNC, mission operations, etc.
  • Prove designs are manufacturable and reliable; work with the production team to ensure a smooth transition to a reliable manufacturing process
This job might be for you if you have these:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering or in “STEM” related majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience working with various fluids components such as pressure vessels, COPVs, valves, pumps, heat exchangers, pressure transducers, or temperature sensors
  • Experience with one or more fluid or thermal modeling tools is required (e.g., ANSYS Workbench, ANSYS Classic, FLUENT, SINDA/FLUINT, Thermal Desktop, MINIVER, etc).
  • Willing to travel approximately 10% to Tucson, AZ facility to support test campaigns and support program reviews is likely.
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Must be available to work extended hours and weekends as needed
It would be impressive if you also have these:
  • Master’s Degree in a relevant field and/or certifications or similar within aerospace, aviation or automotive is preferred.
  • Experience with test instrumentation and control components like pressure transducers, thermocouples, and associated data analysis
  • Experience modeling cryogenic fluids
  • Experience with 3D printed components, pressurized structures / piping, valves, and/or lightweight aerospace structures
  • Knowledge of MATLAB, Python, C/C++
  • Knowledge in the use of 3D CAD tools (e.g. NX, Solidworks, etc.)

  • Ability to work as a member of a cross-functional team
