The Systems Engineering Senior Director leads an organization that provides the enterprise with tools, processes, and expertise that ensure the cross-discipline integration necessary to successfully design and manage our complex systems and products over their full lifecycles.  The organization has broad responsibilities, with particular emphasis in the following areas:
Requirements Definition, Allocation, Verification and Management Mission and System Architecture Analysis and Development System Modeling and Simulation System Design Integration System Level Analysis System Level Test Planning and Execution Specialty Engineering (Reliability, Maintainability, Supportability, Logistics, System Safety) Risk and Opportunity Management Trade Study Management Concurrent Engineering Processes (Technical Performance Metrics, Milestone and Gate Reviews, Action Item tracking) Affordability Process (Design to Cost, Cost As an Independent Variable, Life Cycle Cost Analysis)
The Senior Director will develop, communicate, and lead in implementation of the vision and strategy for the Systems Engineering team, ensuring alignment with the vision and strategy established for the overall enterprise Engineering organization.  The vision will embrace a Model Based approach to Systems Engineering (MBSE), as a key element of an overall Model Based Engineering (MBE) process architecture, and they will lead the team to realizing this MBSE component of the overall MBE vision.  The Senior Director will also promote a culture committed to continuous process and product improvement, and they will use metrics and data to drive this improvement in the Systems Engineering area.  They will also oversee performance of Systems Engineering work in support of enterprise programs, ensuring use of best practices and delivery of high quality engineering products that meet budget and schedule commitments.
This Senior Director supervises subordinate managers and an overall staff of approximately 275 engineers spread across the different enterprise operating sites around the country.  The position is responsible for planning / budgeting, schedule performance, cost performance, staffing, knowledge management, employee development, and continuous improvement of tools and processes throughout the span of the Systems Engineering organization.
The Systems Engineering Senior Director reports directly to the Vice President of Engineering and is a member of the enterprise Engineering Senior Leadership Team.  In that capacity they will closely collaborate with the other members of the Engineering Senior Leadership Team to shape engineering strategy and drive execution at the enterprise level.
Skills: Job Functions:
35% - Provides leadership and oversight for the execution of Systems Engineering work scope across the enterprise. Ensures work is performed with process integrity and a high standard of quality. Proactively intervenes as necessary, driving recovery plans and implementing corrective/preventative actions as may be required.
25% - Provides strategic leadership for the Systems Engineering organization. Sets the Vision, identifies gaps, and leads the organization to excellence by modeling a commitment to continuous improvement using the Aerojet Rocketdyne Business Operating System (ARBOS).
20% - Ensures that the supply of Systems Engineering staff and the associated skill levels stay aligned with enterprise demand, and that these resources are deployed to the programs meeting business needs in a timely manner.
15% - Collaborates with the Engineering Senior Leadership Team in addressing both strategic and tactical matters at the enterprise level.
5% - Supports new business development through participation in capture teams and the proposal review process.
Additional Requirements:
Career progression demonstrating growth in responsibility, accountability, and authority.
Minimum of 10 years of experience working in technical leadership roles on supporting both development and production efforts.
Minimum of 3 years of experience with managing an organization that included subordinate managers.
Preferred Qualifications:
Direct experience supporting all phases of product lifecycles (concept development through production closeout).
Outstanding communication skills (both written and verbal). Demonstrated ability to tune communication style to requirements of the target audience.
Demonstrated ability to positively interact with both internal and external customers and ability to develop close, collaborative relationships with peers, suppliers, customers, and senior leadership.
Demonstrated ability to develop and motivate team members.
Familiarity with full portfolio of Aerojet Rocketdyne programs and products.
Education: Requires a Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Systems Engineering or a related engineering discipline and at least 14 years of engineering experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
