-Under general direction, performs material/process engineering assignments requiring a wide application of advanced principles, theories and concepts in the field plus a working knowledge of other related disciplines.
-Provides imaginative, thorough, and practicable solutions to a wide range of technical problems involving the conventional utilization of material process techniques.
-Conceives and plans projects involving the development of new methods to attain objectives.
-Conducts advanced technical investigations and failure analyses.
-Participates in planning, proposal development and discussions with laboratory customers to advance the product line, reduce cost or increase processing efficiency.
-May fabricate and test components, systems and tooling.
-May analyze and troubleshoot equipment and material problems.
-May analyze and interpret test data and programs.
-Keeps current within area of specialty in support of project assignments.
-May provide technical guidance to less senior material process engineers, engineers, technicians and other laboratory support personnel.
-May provide technical consultation to engineering, manufacturing and management on metallic and nonmetallic materials and processes.
-Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives.
-Erroneous decisions or recommendations or failure to get results may cause serious project delays and may result in considerable expenditure of resources.
-Inter-organizational contacts are frequent while outside customer contacts are occasional in providing solutions to technical problems associated with specific assignment.

-Familiarity with a variety of process, test and measurement equipment, processes and techniques for metallurgical selection and development.
-Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
-Ability to read, interpret, prepare and issue drawings, blueprints and related specifications.
-Understanding of appropriate codes, regulations and specifications as well as applicable customer requirements.
-May require knowledge of design practices, manufacturing techniques and inspection requirements.
-May require knowledge of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacture (CAM) methods and techniques.
-May require ability to program computer controlled process and test equipment.
-May require the use of various computer systems to produce data, reports and spreadsheets.
-Ability to operate effectively in a team environment.
Education: Bachelors/master's degree in an appropriate science and five years of related technical experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
